Hear from three extraordinary self-advocacy groups: Power in Culture and Equality, Positive Powerful Parents and Brain Injury Matters about the work they are doing in self-advocacy, peer support, leadership and community education in underrepresented groups.
Power in Culture and Equality
Power in Culture and Equality (previously known as Power in Culture and Ethnicity) is a self-advocacy group run by people with disability from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The group provides a platform for voices that are often underrepresented, promoting inclusion, equality, and cultural awareness. Through community engagement, storytelling, and advocacy, Power in Culture and Equality works to celebrate identity, challenge discrimination, and support meaningful change within society.
Positive Powerful Parents
Positive Powerful Parents (PPP) is a self advocacy run by and for parents with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 2012 by parent advocate Susan Arthur, PPP aims to raise awareness about the discrimination parents with intellectual disability face, particularly within the child protection system. The group believes that with appropriate support, most parents with intellectual disability can successfully care for their children at home. PPP advocates for equal rights, appropriate support services, and inclusive policies that help families to stay together.
Brain Injury Matters
Brain Injury Matters (BIM) is a self-advocacy and community education organisation run by and for people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Through peer support, leadership opportunities, and research, BIM empowers individuals to share their experiences, advocate for themselves, raise awareness, and reduce isolation. Lived experience drives everything BIM does, creating a more inclusive and understanding community for people with ABI.
