For the more than 700,000 participants and their families relying on the revolutionary National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), 2026 is shaping up to be another transformative year as the government tries to wrestle the scheme back under its control.
The scheme’s growth — which peaked at more than 20 per cent under the Coalition — saw the Albanese government set an 8 per cent annual growth target in 2023. That target has since been revised to 6 per cent.
The initial 8 per cent target could be reached later in 2026, with yet more seismic changes to the scheme this year expected to help the government claw back billions over time.
