Peer support is recognised as an important part of the management of a chronic illness. There is research and anecdotal evidence that peer support helps people feel more connected, understood, and heard.
Effective peer support can help reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, and stress, as well as increase confidence, independence and self-management. During the session, presenter Cindy Van Rooy will discuss what is peer support (and what it is not), rights and responsibilities, and things to consider when implementing a peer support program.
The workshop will also cover key things to consider for peer supporters such as establishing boundaries, communication strategies, managing difficult conversations, and self-care.
