Citizen Advocacy is a community based program in Sunbury and operating in the North West Suburbs of Melbourne and parts of the Macedon Ranges Shire, including Gisborne, Riddells Creek and Romsey.
The program aims to recognise, promote and defend the rights and interests of people within our community, who have an intellectual disability. It does so by recruiting and supporting caring, responsible citizens (advocates) who are prepared to act voluntarily to make a positive difference in the life of a person who may be lonely, face difficult challenges, or be in a risky situation (protégés). The Citizen Advocacy Office carefully matches protégés and citizen advocates ensuring that there is a good fit between the needs and interests of the protégés and the abilities, resources and commitment of the citizen advocate.
The Citizen Advocacy Program is funded by the Commonwealth Government and receives some financial support from the Hume City Council.
