Calls for mandatory fire sprinklers in Specialist Disability Accommodation

Brisbane resident Todd Winther, who has cerebral palsy, is terrified of what could happen if a fire broke out in his home.

“I can’t get out of bed independently on my own,” the 42-year-old, who uses a wheelchair, said.

He said that even if he was in his wheelchair, it would still take time to get out of his apartment.

People with disability are at higher risk from home fires and are over-represented in fire fatalities, a Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre report from 2019 said.
