Acquired Brain Injury and the Justice System, Voices for Change

Time: 11:45am - 12:45pm

Location: NAB Arena

People with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABIs) are vastly over-represented in Victorian prisons.  A conservative estimate from Australian Institute of Health and Welfare suspects that 40-90% of the Australian prison population has an Acquired Brain Injury.  Voices For Change is a self-advocacy group made up of members with the lived experience of this intersection between ABI x Criminal Justice experience. The group has recently completed creating their own self-advocacy podcast series, sharing their stories, interviewing sector experts, and providing their views on what needs to change.  Join Voices for Change to hear about their expeirences developing All Been Inside, their new podcast series, and how this has informed their ongoing self-advocacy work within the sector. In this session VFC members will share excerpts from the podcast and cover questions such as;

  • What is an ABI?
  • Lived-experience stories of navigating the criminal justice system with an ABI
  • The relationship between ABIs and the criminal justice system
  • Crucial areas of justice reform
  • What VFC members have learnt about self-advocacy
