Shukrullah Sirat

Growing up in rural Afghanistan, as a child, Shukrullah worked on a farm for half the day, then walked to and from school for two hours every day. These early experiences gave him a deep understanding of how difficult life can be for disadvantaged and vulnerable people. After migrating to Australia, Shukrullah personally experienced the challenges of the settlement process and came to understand how difficult it can be for individuals and families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds—especially those living with disabilities and facing language and literacy barriers.

Attaining a Master of Social Work provided Shukrullah with a strong foundation to become a professional advocate dedicated to supporting people in need. He has worked in both the settlement and disability sectors for over a decade, gaining a deep understanding of the unique and complex challenges faced by CALD people with disabilities in Australia. His passion for working with CALD communities led him to join ADEC, an organisation established in 1983 with a long-standing history of supporting CALD individuals and families. In his role as an advocate, Shukrullah has worked tirelessly to support CALD families who have members with disabilities, helping them access appropriate services and supports.
