Ian Gray

In March 2001 Ian Gray was appointed as the Chief Magistrate of Victoria, and leads 112 magistrates covering 52 court locations throughout the State. From 1982 to 1986 he was in private practice as a solicitor and then as a barrister. From 1987 to 1990 he was the Principal Legal Advisor for the Northern Land Council in Darwin. Following his appointment in 1990 as a magistrate in the Northern Territory, in 1992 he was appointed as Chief Magistrate in that State and was a member of the National Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation between 1995 and 1997. Upon his return to the Victorian Bar in 1998, Ian continued to work as a mediator in the native title area. In 2000 he was appointed as the head of the Land & Property Unit for the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor and continues to be involved with the justice sector of that country.
