Advocate lodges complaint after accessibility issues at Disability Minister Mark Butler’s office

A viral video showing a lack of accessibility into the offices of the federal minister for disability has highlighted broader issues for access into public buildings, an advocate says.

Disability advocate and wheelchair user Shane Hryhorec said he lodged a complaint with the Humans Rights Commission after he was unable to access Mark Butler’s offices recently.

Mr Hryhorec said he was meeting with Mr Butler to discuss issues affecting people with a disability, but was left stranded outside the building as the main access was by stairs and the doorbell to request wheelchair access was broken.

“The thing that really shocked me was that there was a sign saying ring the doorbell for delivery and wheelchair access,” Mr Hryhorec said.
